3 Of The Best Music Documentaries Of The 21st Century You Might Not Have Heard Of

When it comes to documentaries, most people either love them or they are decidedly indifferent about them. There aren’t very many that say they just don’t like documentaries. As long as it is an interesting topic, what’s not to like about watching a film that actually teaches you something.

With that being said, there is one genre of documentary that speaks to all of us, regardless of our age or what part of the world we are from. That’s because this specific type of documentary speaks the universal language of music.

The music documentary genre has taken us on a journey into the world of pop, rock, metal, world and just about every type of music you can imagine. And, with Nash Productions’ latest jazz documentary, ‘How to Make a Living in Jazz’, even today’s jazz scene is covered.

The beauty of the music documentary is that fans can see just what it takes to make it in the music industry and what their favourite artists have gone through to get where they are. Now, with that being said, we are going to take a look at some of the best indie music documentaries of the 21st century. Let’s get started:

3 Of The Best Music Documentaries Of The 21st Century You Might Not Have Heard Of

“What Happened, Miss Simone?” (2015)- this biographical documentary gives us a look at the life and musical career of the legendary Nina Simone. Liz Garbus and Hal Tulchin follow Simone’s career and natural born talent, impassioned activism, and fiery temper as viewers realise just how far ahead of her time she really was.

“The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town” (2010)- American rocker, Bruce Springsteen had a very frustrating career in music. Although his fame would say otherwise, his path shows the true cost of living the rock and roll dream and making it in an industry that was rapidly changing. With film footage of his mid-70s recording sessions, we see just how frustratingly talented the performer really was.

“George Harrison: Living in the Material World” (2011)- whether you were a Beatle’s fan, or not, you will appreciate this look at George Harrison. Martin Scorsese’s tribute to the most restrained Beatle, was co-produced by his widow, Olivia, and released ahead of the decade-anniversary of Harrison’s death. With previously unseen footage and interviews, plus commentary from his former bandmates as well as contemporaries like Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton, the film examines Harrison’s philanthropy, travels, amateur car racing and more.
